STYLE NOTES - Winter Investments

If there’s one thing to invest in this Winter, it has to be a fabulous coat. With the international couture fashion weeks all wrapped up, it was clear from the attendees spotted on the streets that a statement coat is the must have piece of the season.

Taking inspiration from the streets of Paris, New York, London and Milan, it’s all about the coat. Key trends for AW14 are pastels; pale pink, baby blue and lilac, classic neutrals black, navy, grey and camel, pops of colour like cobalt blue and purple and statement plaid and houndstooth.

How to wear it-

The best thing about investing in one great coat is that it will instantly update your existing pieces without having to buy an entire new season’s wardrobe. The key is length and cut. A coat that falls between mid-thigh and knee will provide the statement piece to work with a variety of outfits- jeans and trousers, dresses and skirts. Styles vary from the clean lines of a tailored coat, to the modern oversized ‘cocoon’ look as seen on many fashion editors, bloggers and models. The latter, more voluminous style requires balance, so if this is the look you’re going to try this season, ensure you create a slim silhouette by teaming your coat with a pencil skirt, slim trouser or skinny jean and heels. If your style is classic you can’t go wrong with a tailored coat that will work from day to night, and more likely from season to season. But classic dressers why not take a fashion risk this season and choose a colour other than black?
